A cluster of life sciences and AI companies are choosing the Isle of Man as a base for early-stage drug discovery R&D. Here's why the island's regulatory and tax environment is attracting biotech.
When we launched TEKEX in the Isle of Man, we expected to find the same mix of fintech, gaming and digital assets that the island is traditionally known for. What surprised us was the biotech conversation.
Three separate founders we met in the first month were working at the intersection of AI and life sciences. Not pharmaceutical manufacturing — that requires infrastructure the island doesn't have — but computational drug discovery, where the primary assets are datasets, algorithms and regulatory strategy.
Why the IoM makes sense for early biotech
Intellectual property holding structures available in the Isle of Man are genuinely competitive for life sciences companies. R&D tax incentives, combined with the island's ability to offer fast and direct access to government, create conditions that are difficult to replicate in London or Cambridge at seed stage.
The AI angle is significant. Computational drug discovery — using machine learning to identify candidate molecules, predict protein folding, and model interactions — requires relatively little wet-lab infrastructure. A small team with a good data pipeline and the right compute access can operate anywhere. Several are choosing Douglas.
The talent question
The honest answer is that specialist biotech talent is thin on the island. But this is changing. The University of the Isle of Man is building relationships with Liverpool and Manchester; and remote-first operating models mean a Douglas-registered company can have research staff embedded in universities across the UK.
